Swimming in the natural thermal spring

Nestled in the serene landscapes of the Granada Geopark, Las Dunas offers countless opportunities to explore the unique surrounding area. One of our favourite excursions is to the Baños de Zújar (Baths of Zujar), a free-to-access natural thermal spring only 10 minutes drive from the caves. It is located in the neighbouring town of Zujar, affectionately known as “Spa City” by locals. We can confidently say it lives up to its nickname.

Swimming in the natural thermal spring is a pleasure all year round because it's heated by the earth’s natural thermal activity to an average temperature of 40 °c (104 °F). In addition to providing a relaxing spa adventure, the mineralised hot spring water is considered to have health and skin benefits.

The baths have a fascinating history, with evidence of local use dating back to the third century BC. Today, they remain a popular destination for both locals and visitors. Despite their popularity, the peaceful and expansive atmosphere ensures they never feel overcrowded. Parking is always available, making it easy to visit at any time of day.

We like to go in the evening to watch the sunset over the geopark, or after dark to stargaze. The bottom of the spring consists of soft muddy clay, so you can safely enter barefoot. As an added bonus, the natural clay is perfect for creating fun art projects. When you visit, keep an eye out for the mud sculptures around the edges of the springs, left behind by previous guests.

Whether you’re in need of relaxation, an adventure, or a chance to play with clay, the Banos de Zujar is a must-see.
